For RV enthusiasts who will be on the road this Thanksgiving, there's no need to miss out on the traditional holiday meal. With a little preparation ahead of time, you can enjoy a turkey and all the fixings in the comfort of your RV.

At the Campground

If you'll be at your destination a day or two in advance of the holiday, you'll have ample time to set up camp and prepare your turkey, ham, or other main dish. Tips to keep in mind include:

  • Allow enough time to defrost and cook the turkey in a reasonable time.
  • Remember, you can defrost the bird overnight in the fridge but it can't remain there for an extended period uncooked.
  • If you don't want to bring a turkey along, purchase one a day before at the local grocery, defrost and cook the next day.
  • Prepare side dishes such cranberry sauce, greens, potato salad or fruit salad ahead of time.
  • Using packaged stuffing is convenient and a time saver.
  • Prepare desserts a day ahead of time or purchase frozen pies and cakes to lessen cooking time and lengthen eating time.

On the Road

For travelers who will be on the road on Thanksgiving traveling towards a destination, there's no need to worry about missing dinner. There are two convenient options for you.

Prepare everything before you go. Store and freeze all items and when ready to eat, heat and serve.

To save time, many grocery stores prepare the entire Thanksgiving meal that includes the turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce. All you have to do is place the order and a pick up date.

When picking up your order, also pick up a fresh-baked or frozen pie and some whipped topping. Store everything in the fridge until you're ready to eat.

If you'll still be traveling on Thanksgiving day, find a local park or picnic ground, spread out a tablecloth and enjoy the already prepared meal. Otherwise, hold off until you reach your camping destination, make a side dish or two, light some candles, and enjoy the holiday meal.
