Best Places to Watch the Solar Eclipse in New Orleans

Although Louisiana is not in the path of the total solar eclipse of 2017, it will still be visible to those who take the time to turn their sights to the sky around 1:29pm.  When you live in a big city such as Baton Rouge or New Orleans, it can be hard to get a great view of the sky, so if you are planning on heading out to watch the eclipse you may want to consider driving a short distance to wide open spaces.  Here is a list of the best places to watch the eclipse from in and around New Orleans.

Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, LA will definitely be a hot spot for the eclipse viewing.  With its country-like setting and quiet atmosphere it will be a great place to sit back and relax while the moon makes its trek through the Sun’s path.  If you want to make a weekend of it, they have very nice campsites with full hookups, an on-site swimming pool, and lake access for a little recreational fishing and boating.

Woldenburg Park is a great spot within city limits to view the eclipse.  It sits right on the Mississippi River and offers an ample building-free skyline.  If you work downtown and want to take in the eclipse on your lunch break, there is plenty of grassy area to sit, hiking and biking trails, and you can watch the boats and ships go by.

New Orleans West KOA- another great campground to stay at and view the eclipse from.  Stay the weekend and enjoy their swimming pool and close proximity to the French Quarter.  Take in all the sights and sounds of the downtown, visit the Audubon Zoo with the kids, or visit the National World War II museum.  Pets are welcome!

    Eye Safety

It’s important to remember since LA is not in the path of totality, do not look directly at the eclipse as it passes.  Severe eye damage can be caused so be prepared with proper eyewear. Special solar glasses are available at local stores near you.
